Is it possible that Office Politics is not always bad?   In a word: YES! It’s important to understand that “politics” no matter if it’s office politics exists all the time whenever you assemble a group of people.   I’m sure that is a shocking revelation but true. Let’s look at what Politics is, why it is important to understand and how you can play it well without turning into a person people avoid.   I think you’ll change your opinion of it. In its simplest form, office politics is about building relationships in order to achieve some kind of end result.   It’s how things get done and it’s done 100% of the time on all jobs.   Our jobs are always dependent on our interactions with others.   Also, when I say “jobs” or work, it doesn’t have to be paid work either.   If you belong to a neighborhood association, parent-teacher organization or volunteer, all of those things have no income but there is still politics going on. Any time you get a group of people together you have a dynamic that soon forms.   Generally, it starts with a person seeking to influence others to do something.   That isn’t a bad thing most of the time.   People need to sell others on their ideas most of the time in order to get them to give their resources.   Those resources can include money, time and skills. In the workplace, we influence people to support and take action on everything from helping with a project to promotions.   In other words, office politics is a constant.   Once you start paying attention, most of the time Office Politics is taking place and when it is positive we either don’t notice it or call it something nice like “group harmony”. What makes this important to you?   Office politics happens all the time and it happens as a result of the relationships each person forms.   Some people think that all they should have to do is show up, do their work and go home. They think they shouldn’t have to befriend people at work. Those people are the ones that are most damaged by office politics because no one at work is there to support them and that is a huge problem.   You can’t function like that.   No one is autonomous, ever.   You have to think of yourself like a cog in a watch, each cog interconnecting with others in harmony to make the watch tell time.   If you aren’t “meshing” with others, you create problems for them and you. Sooner or later, you will feel like you are working in a hostile work environment.   It’s almost a primitive reaction when a person doesn’t fit in a group, that the group wants the outlier to either integrate or leave.   It may seem like people are then playing dirty office politics with you as the brunt of what is transpiring. When I say you put your career at peril is because the situation I’m painting means that you not only won’t get vital support and information to perform your job well but people can openly want you gone.   Clearly, none of that inspires a desire to promote you no matter how skilled you are.   It’s all connected, it won’t be fun AND your career will crater. What do you do?   Easy peasy.(yes, I said this and I’m disgusted with myself)   You form good working relationships with people around you at work.   This includes the boss and other people in management. Many people are too intimidated by management to feel like they can form a relationship with them.   If this is you, you need to snap out of it.   Management didn’t instantly show up as management.   They are regular people like you who simply have a different job as you.   They most likely had to put in the time and demonstrate some capability so they would get promoted but to be “awe-struck” by management does nothing for you, your career or the other person. The reason why forming good work relationships is easy is because you come in contact with a number of people routinely to get your work done.   You may be so focused on your work that you ignore the few extra minutes it takes to connect at a personal level. If you’re like a lot of introverts, getting personal may have its challenges.   The easiest way to start developing a relationship with a work mate is to show interest in them by asking questions.   Start with the work they do and progress to interests they have outside of work.   A vital part thing of getting to know the other person is to learn what is important to them professionally. When you can understand where a person’s priorities are, you are better able to support them.   When you offer support to another person, it can be a gesture that will solidify your relationship and trust in you. Trust is a funny thing.   For the most part, we trust each other but only up to a point.   From there, our actions dictate if we endow the relationship with more or less trust.   When our actions demonstrate that we have the other person’s interest in mind, the level of trust goes up.   On that basis, the office politics is formed. We support and promote people we trust.   People we trust are positioned to influence our decisions and actions.   When we don’t penetrate the superficial nature of simply working at someone’s side, we don’t allow trust and understanding to form.   You have to dig deeper and then show the other person you understand what’s important to them. Positive v/s Negative or Dirty   Everything I’ve outlined is true no matter if the politics is positive or negative.   What makes Office Politics negative is when actions and decisions are made AT other’s expense.   Positive Office Politics happens when it is done for the benefit of the business and in support of others. This means that even if some people are building trust and support of one another, the influence that is transpiring, may be to advance one person’s objectives while destroying another person’s in the process.   It doesn’t have to end up this way but people who are jealous or competitive only see one possible outcome and that is to push back others as a means of advancing.   I personally like to think that people who act like this will have karma visited upon them 10x. Introvert Whisperer / New Job-Self Doubts - Introvert Whisperer New Job-Self Doubts After all the hard work and effort to land this job, now that you’re here, you’re not so sure it’s right for you.  You had your checklist of important criteria for the dream job and dream company, which you checked off, so why are you feeling so queasy? Did you make the wrong choice? You probably made the right choice and right now your sense of discomfort has to do with the transition you are going through.   You have to understand the mechanics of change. There is the event or action.  In your case, the event was taking a new job.   Then, you have the transition or emotional adjustment that goes with the change. We all too often mistake our discomfort during new job adjustment for a belief that we have gotten into a bad job situation.  As a culture which isn’t too oriented toward the impact of change (other cultures are) we aren’t all that savvy about these normal reactions.  We also aren’t too patient, especially when discomfort sets in.  We want it to go away; and when it doesn’t, we may over-react.   The best tactic to take at a time like this is to follow a few tips for managing your transition: Understand the transition process.  Transition is all about you adjusting and becoming fully integrated into your new job.  During this period of time, you will probably feel some loss due to no longer being in your previous job â€" you are in a type of mourning for what came before, even if it was bad.  You aren’t yet comfortable with where you are, because you don’t know enough of anything to be routine or predictable.  You haven’t yet formed any close relationships; which means you’re missing a support structure.  While all of this might not comfort you, simply knowing what to anticipate is half the battle.  It’s like your doctor telling you that you’ll be in “some discomfort” after surgery.  That fact alone doesn’t make it go away, but you at least know what to expect. And there is a certain comfort in knowing you’re normal. Be patient.  We aren’t a very patient group.  We’re used to fast results and gratification.  Right now you need to develop some patience about how quickly all the dots will connect.  They won’t connect any faster with anxiety about this new job. Expect surprises.  There will be things you will discover about the job, people or place of business that might really turn you off.  Expect that to be the case.  What you discover could dishearten you, but rather than leave in disgust, address it as a challenge to tackle.  No place or position is going to be perfect; and your success will be dependent on your ability to adapt and prevail. Expect setbacks.  There will come a day when you think you have a handle on things and are feeling like you have command of your domain.  Then, something will happen that will vividly remind you that you don’t know what you don’t know.  That’s very natural also.  How you handle the occasional setback is as important as how you handle victories.  As long as you are continuing your learning curve and realize it truly takes a while to absorb it all, you are moving forward.  This doesn’t signal a bad fit for you. There is no magic amount of time for you to move through your new job transition.  Generally speaking, by 3 months you should have learned most of your job and are contributing with confidence.  You still have a learning curve and you’re not yet as fully comfortable as you would like.  Usually, a year is the timeframe to fully assess whether or not this job is right for you.  Hang in there!  It will get better. Our Social Mission For every student who pays, we provide free tutoring for a child who can't. To do this we work with outstanding social entrepreneurs to deliver tutoring in challenging inner city schools. Alex Kelly  is the founder of The Access Project. When he was 21 he became a teacher at Highbury Grove School that had sent on average 1 pupil to a Russell Group university every other year for the last ten years.   He was given a class of bright 12 year-olds and made it his mission to help them progress.   Four years later the school sent 10 students to Russell Group universities.   Determined to spread what he had learnt to more schools he has secured donations to set up projects in other schools and set the target of being in all of the 130 most deprived schools in the UK by 2016. www.theaccessproject.org.uk/  Susannah Clark  is the inspirational tutor behind Action Tutoring.   She, and an incredible network of city professionals, started volunteering in schools in 2010.   Word got round and by 2011 she had teams of volunteers in 15 London schools.   They work alongside teachers, supporting the pupils with Maths and English.   Action Tutoring are expanding into 40 schools in autumn 2012 and changing the lives of hundreds of children who didn’t previously have access to tutors. www.actiontutoring.org.uk/  Sharla Duncan  started YELP students (which became Team Up) at King’s College in 2007 where she set up a university club to volunteer in a local school.   When she went to do her masters at Oxford she set up another three teams and then had the idea to grow and help 50,000 students by 2016.   She now works out of Phoenix Secondary School in Shepherds Bush helping networks of bright students work with pupils in challenging schools. www.teamup.org.uk/  When you book you will see 5% of the cost being donated to our charity, the Tutorfair Foundation.   We add to this with our own fundraising and then use it to help Alex, Susannah and Sharla.   We involve our own tutors wherever possible in some big one-off events and some ongoing small group tuition. I have always liked to be helpful.  My children call it the Sir Galahad Dad behaviour.  Providing help without being invited can be challenging or dangerous e.g. as a Dad advising his son, only wearing a T shirt, that he’s not properly dressed for the blizzard outside . . .  he might receive abuse, perhaps from embarrassment. As a tutor my help has always been invited, and it is a delight to help children succeed. Who inspired you in education? My father - I come from a family of teachers.  My father achieved excellent 11+ results and, in his last years as curriculum master of a new comprehensive, achieved English and Mathematics O levels (the old GCSEs) for every child.  I use some of his methods. What else do you get up to besides tutoring? I am a Granddad so family is very important although mine is distributed widely across the globe. I would like to be able to give people the power to understand each other. Not only would this be a helpful tool for a tutor but it could lead to a kinder and more peaceful world. What advice would you give to a parent on how to find a tutor? I believe that tutoring requires a clinical approach: that is, the ‘treatment’ must be carefully matched to the ‘patient’.  I suggest a similar approach to choosing a doctor - recommendations and desk-side manner.  Ask to speak to parents of previous students rather than just read a reference. Be really critical on your first meeting with the tutor - can you, will you be friends with this tutor?
